Age Jokes Without the Sting
Age jokes are the most common birthday humor and the easiest to get wrong. Three adjustments keep them friendly.
Make it a compliment in disguise. "Aged to perfection." "A classic since 1986." "You're not getting older, you're getting cheddar."
Say "we", not "you". A joke that includes the giver is shared, not aimed. "We have reached the age where the cake is the most exciting part of the party." "Happy birthday from someone who will always be older than you."
Joke about the number, not about decline. Counting candles is fair game. Memory, hair, eyesight, weight and wrinkles are not, unless the person makes those jokes first and often.

Where the Joke Goes: Front or Inside
Setup on the front, punchline inside. Opening the card is a built-in pause, which is all the timing a joke needs. Front: "For your birthday, I wanted to get you something truly special." Inside: "Then I remembered you already have me." Keep the front line under about eight words, in large letters.
The whole joke on the front. Puns work this way, because the picture and caption have to be seen together. That leaves the inside free for something sincere.

On the envelope. "Do not open until cake is served" on the flap starts the joke before the card is out.
Whichever layout you use, tell one joke per card. A second gag competes with the first, and the card starts to read like a list.
