The best card for a friend is one nobody else could receive: built on an inside joke, a photo of the two of you, or a list of things only you both remember. None of these needs drawing skill. They need ten minutes of remembering before you pick up the scissors. The ideas below run from the most personal to the fastest, so you can choose by how much time is left before the party.
The Inside-Joke Card
An inside joke is the strongest material you have, and the rule for using it is simple: do not explain it. Put the phrase on the front in large letters and nothing else. Your friend laughs, everyone else is puzzled, and that is the point.
Three ways to turn a shared story into a card:
- The quote. The line one of you said that became a catchphrase, lettered across the front with the date it was first said.
- The object. One item from the story as the only picture: the parking ticket, the burnt lasagna, the wrong highway exit sign.
- The official document. Lay the front out as a certificate, a ticket, a menu or a weather forecast. "Certificate of Survival: Camping Trip, July. Awarded for bravery in the face of raccoons."
Choose a story you both laugh about, not one that only you find funny. If you are unsure, the three-question check in funny birthday card ideas that stay kind settles it.
If your friend has a signature animal or a thing they collect, that works the same way. A fox for the friend who owns six fox mugs says "I know you" without a word. The three below are named for their animals, and a card like that needs only your caption.

The Photo Card
A photo turns a plain folded card into a keepsake, and the sizes work out neatly.
- A 4 x 6 inch print (about 10 x 15 cm) fits the front of a 5 x 7 card with a half-inch border all around.
- For an A2 card, 4.25 x 5.5 inches, trim the print to 3.75 x 5 inches for a quarter-inch border.
- A photo-booth strip, usually 2 x 6 inches, suits a tall, narrow slimline card of 3.5 x 8.5 inches.
Attach prints with double-sided tape or photo corners. Wet glue can ripple a print as it dries. Put a mat of colored cardstock an eighth of an inch larger behind the photo, and it looks framed.
Ideas for the photo itself:
- Then and now. The oldest picture you have together on the front, the newest inside.
- The place. Not the two of you, but the diner, the trailhead or the dorm you shared.
- The year in four. Four small square prints in a grid, one for each season since their last birthday.
Pick a picture your friend likes of themselves. A candid that is hilarious to you and unflattering to them belongs in your phone, not on a card that will sit on their shelf.

The Memory List
A list is the easiest heartfelt card to write, because it removes the blank page. Choose a number and fill it in.
- "Five things from this year I will not forget."
- "Ten reasons you are my first call."
- For a milestone: "Thirty things about you, for thirty years."
Mix the kinds of entry so the list does not go flat: a place, a meal, a phrase they always say, a time they showed up, a habit you find funny, something you admire. End with one that looks ahead, such as "Number 10: whatever we do next summer."
A short list fits inside a 5 x 7 card. For a longer one, make an accordion insert. Cut a strip 11 x 4 inches from Letter paper, score it every 2.75 inches and fold it back and forth into four panels. Glue the last panel inside an A2 card. That leaves seven small faces to write on, and the strip unfolds when the card is opened.
For a Friend Who Lives Far Away
When you cannot be at the party, the card is the visit, so let it carry more.
- Write longer. Tell them one ordinary story from your week. Ordinary news is what distance takes away.
- Add something flat. A photo, a pressed flower, a recipe card, a handwritten playlist, a few stickers.
- Include "open when" notes. Two or three small sealed envelopes labeled "open when you miss home" or "open when you need a laugh".
- Plan the opening. Ask them to wait and open it during a call with you.
Mail it early. USPS quotes 1 to 5 days for First-Class Mail inside the country, so a week ahead is a reasonable margin. For cards going abroad it says only that delivery varies by destination, so allow considerably longer. Keep the envelope flat and rectangular if you want it to travel as an ordinary letter. Square envelopes, rigid or lumpy ones and anything over a quarter inch thick cost more to send, as explained in card sizes and envelopes.
Group Cards From the Whole Circle
One card from everyone needs room and a little organizing.
- Go large. Use a 5 x 7 card, or fold a full sheet of Letter cardstock in half for a 5.5 x 8.5 card, which fits an A9 envelope.
- Keep the inside plain. A light, unprinted interior gives the most writing space.
- Start in the corners. Ask the first people to sign small near the edges. The center fills up by itself.
- Name one organizer and one deadline. Set it a few days before the birthday, not on the day.
If the group is spread across cities, collect a line from each person by message. Write each line on a strip of paper, or print them, and glue the strips inside like a collage. Ask people to use their own words, even if it is only four of them.

Same-Day Cards
A birthday you remembered at lunch still deserves a real card. These take about ten minutes.
- Washi tape candles. Stick five short strips of patterned tape upright in a row on a white card. Draw a small flame above each with a marker and write "Make a wish" below.
- Paper balloons. Cut three ovals from colored scraps, glue them near the top, and draw strings down to a single point.
- The big number. Cut their age from patterned paper or a magazine page and glue it in the center of the front. Add their name under it.
- Print and fold. A printable card on cardstock, trimmed, scored and folded, with the name lettered by hand.
For the last one, the settings that keep the size right are in how to print greeting cards at home. These three are printables by name, with a bundle first if you would like a few choices in one download.

What to Write Inside
With a friend, write the way you talk. A few lines to borrow or bend:
- "Happy birthday to the person who has seen my worst haircut and stayed."
- "There is nobody I would rather do nothing with."
- "Twenty years in, and you are still my first call."
- "You have talked me out of bad ideas and into good ones. Thank you for knowing the difference."
- "Happy birthday. Let's be old and loud together someday."
Add one detail from this year and it becomes yours. A simple formula for that, with more examples, is in what to write in a birthday card.
Put the next plan in writing. "Brunch on the 14th, I am booking it" at the bottom of a card is a gift on its own, and it gives a long-distance friend a date to look forward to.
Supplies for Photo and Group Cards
Cards for friends often start with a printed photo. Photo corners hold a print without glue, and metallic pens give everyone in the group a color to sign in.
