A birthday message needs three things: the wish, one detail that could only be about this person, and a look ahead. Two or three sentences cover it. The detail is what people remember, so spend your thinking time there and keep everything else simple.
The Three-Line Formula
- The wish. "Happy birthday" is enough. It does not need to be clever.
- Something specific. A memory from this year, a quality you admire, or a thank-you for one particular thing.
- A look ahead. A hope for their year, or a plan you will keep.
Put together, it reads like this: "Happy birthday, Dana. I still think about the road trip in June and how you kept everyone laughing through that flat tire. Here's to a year with more trips and fewer tires."
If you are stuck on the second line, finish one of these sentences: "I always think of you when…", "Thank you for the time you…", "Nobody else can…". The examples below can be copied as they are, but each gets better when you swap in a real detail.
For a Friend
Friends get the widest range, from a single line to a full page. Aim for the tone you use when you talk to each other.
- "Happy birthday to the person who knows my coffee order, my worst jokes and exactly when to call. So glad you were born."
- "Another year of you is good news for everyone who knows you. Dinner is on me this week, and you pick the place."
- "You make ordinary Tuesdays better. I hope today gives some of that back to you."
- "Happy birthday. Same time next year, same bad singing, same good cake."
Card ideas built around inside jokes, photos and memory lists are in birthday cards for friends.

For Mom, Dad and Family
With family, gratitude lands best when it names one thing. "Thanks for everything" slides past. "Thanks for driving four hours to help me move" stays.
- "Mom, every good habit I have started in your kitchen. Happy birthday, and thank you for all of it."
- "Happy birthday, Mom. I notice more every year how much you did without ever mentioning it. I hope today you get to sit down and be spoiled."
- "Dad, thank you for the rides, the repairs and the advice I pretended not to hear. I heard it. Happy birthday."
- "Happy birthday to the man who taught me to check the oil and keep my word."
- For a sibling: "Happy birthday to my first friend and longest-running rival. I would still pick you for my team."
- For a grandparent: "Happy birthday, Grandma. Your house is still my favorite place to be."
The cards below are addressed to a parent or a son by name, so the front does part of the work and your lines inside can stay short.

There are more themes for each parent, and notes on cards from young kids, in birthday card ideas for mom and dad.
For a Partner
Skip the grand statement and describe one small, true thing. It reads as more romantic than a paragraph of superlatives.
- "Happy birthday to my favorite person to come home to. Here's to another year of your laugh across the table."
- "I like who I am next to you. Happy birthday, love. Tonight is all yours."
- "Every year with you gets filed under 'best so far'. Happy birthday."
- "You still make me look up when you walk in. Happy birthday."
For a Coworker or Boss
Keep it friendly, short and free of anything about age. On a group card, one line and your name is the polite length, because fifteen other people need space.
- "Happy birthday, Marcus. The team runs better and the meetings run shorter because of you. Enjoy the day."
- "Wishing you a great birthday and a year with fewer emails and more wins."
- "Happy birthday. Hope someone else handles the hard questions today."
- For a manager: "Happy birthday, and thank you for your support this year. I hope you get a real break today."

For a Child
Write to the child, not to the parents reading over their shoulder. Use short words, print clearly so a new reader can manage it alone, and mention the age, because to a child the number is the whole point.
- "Happy 6th birthday, Leo. Six is a big number and you are a big-hearted kid. Have the best day."
- "Happy birthday to the fastest runner and best dinosaur expert I know."
- "You are 8 today. That means eight candles, eight hugs and one very big wish."
- For a teen: "Happy birthday. You get more interesting every year, and I like hearing what you think. Cake first, though."
Milestones and Belated Wishes
For a milestone, name the number if the person is proud of it, and say what the years have added. Leave the "over the hill" material alone unless you know for certain they enjoy it.
- 18: "Eighteen looks good on you. The world just gained a very capable adult."
- 21: "Happy 21st. May this year be full of firsts you will want to remember."
- 30: "Welcome to thirty. It is a lot like your twenties, except you finally own a decent pan."
- 40: "Forty years of making rooms better by walking into them. Happy birthday."
- 50: "Fifty years in, and you are just getting to the good part."
- 60 and up: "Happy 70th. Thank you for seven decades of stories, and for telling the best ones more than once."
A late card needs one short apology at most. After that, write the same message you would have written on time.
- "This card is late. The wish is not any smaller. Happy belated birthday."
- "I missed the day but not the point: I am glad you are in my life."
- "Fashionably late, like all the best guests. I hope your birthday was a good one."
Funny or Heartfelt
Choose by the relationship, and by who else will see the card. A joke that works between two old friends can fall flat when it is read aloud at a family dinner.
The safest mix is a funny front and a sincere inside. The card gets the laugh, and your handwriting carries the warmth. One real sentence under the punchline is enough: "Kidding aside, I am lucky to know you."
These three are funny cards by name, which leaves you free to write something kind inside.

Pens and Cards for the Message
A short message looks more deliberate in a pen that suits the card. Fine liners keep small handwriting sharp, gel pens add color, and a brush pen is enough for a simple hand-lettered greeting.

How to Sign Off
The closing line should match how close you are. When in doubt, go one step warmer than feels necessary; nobody is offended by "Warmly".
| Who the card is for | Sign-offs that fit |
|---|---|
| Partner, parents, children | Love, / All my love, / Love always, |
| Close friends and siblings | Love, / Yours, / Hugs, / Cheers, |
| Coworkers, neighbors, teachers | Best wishes, / Warm wishes, / All the best, / Warmly, |
| Group card | Your first name, or "From all of us in Accounting" |
A few practical habits make the writing itself go better:
- Draft the message on scrap paper first and count the lines, so it fits the space.
- Start higher on the panel than feels natural. Handwriting drifts down and runs out of room.
- Test your pen on the back of the card or on a scrap of the same paper. Gel ink can smear on glossy or coated stock, where a ballpoint or a fine permanent pen is safer.
- Let the ink dry before you close the card.
- Add the year in a corner. People who keep cards like knowing when each one arrived.
If the card is dark or heavily patterned inside, glue in a panel of light paper cut a quarter inch smaller than the card front and write on that.
Pick the person, fill in the three lines, and write the specific one first. If you still need the card itself, the birthday cards for him and her collection is sorted by who it is for.
